Ultra Low GI

What is Ultra Low GI feed?ULTRA-Low-GI-20kg

Ultra Low GI is a feed that offers energy to your horse in a different form to most other feeds; it is one of the best of the calming feeds for horses in the marketplace.

The effect of sugar in the bloodstream is measured by GI or the Glycemic Index; this offers a rating of how a feed affects blood sugar levels in the horse and essentially, the higher the GI, the more the effect on blood sugar levels.  Our Ultra Low GI feed has a very low GI marker compared to traditional grain based horse feeds. Read more about Low GI Feed, Excitable Behaviour, Problems and Solutions

How does Ultra Low GI feed differ from traditional horse feeds?

Unlike grain based feeds where starch is the principal energy source, Ultra Low GI feed is a fantastic low starch horse feed as it provides energy in the form of “Super Fibres” (highly digestible fibres) and plant oils to give your horse a safe, gentle and reliable source of fuel.  Ultra Low GI feeds avoid cereals as an energy source so no barley or oats and a true low GI feed should not contain any grains.  Our low GI feeds are true to their word and contain no grains at all but some feeds on the market which claim to be low GI do in fact contain some grains (cereals) so read your ingredient list carefully.

Why is Ultra Low GI feed a better source of energy for my horse than a cereal based feed?

Traditional grain based feeds are not suitable for certain types of horses.  Some horses exhibit undesirable behavioural issues when fed on traditional grain feeds due to the amount of starch produced during digestion – essentially, they can ‘hot up’ so Ultra Low GI feed is the best calming horse feed for these types of horses.

Despite the fact that grain feeds have been offered to horses for many years, some horses do not actually tolerate high starch diets very well; it can lead to adverse gut fermentation and other conditions such as tying up, sometimes even leading to colic.  Other horses have pre-existing conditions such as laminitis, Cushings or Equine Metabolic Syndrome and are clinically required to be on feed which avoids high starch levels, and require a low sugar horse feed with energy sourced from fibre and oil.

What is in Ultra Low GI feed to provide energy for my horse?Ultra Lo GI Feed

Rather than using oats or barley to provide energy, Ultra Low GI feed uses Soya Hulls.  The effect of a particular feed on blood sugar levels is called the Glycemic Index.  Oats have a Glycemic Index (GI) of 100 which is deemed to be very high; Soya Hulls in contrast have a GI of 7 so no comparison.

Also an excellent source of protein and offering some secondary energy value and extremely palatable to the horse are micronized lupins.  Treated in the same way as linseed to make the nutritional content accessible to the horse’s digestive system, the process of micronisation ensures good digestibility and also palatability thereby reducing the risk of conditions associated with poor digestibility such as laminitis, acidosis and colic.
